Registration Status

Maximum enrollment period

The maximum enrollment period for the doctoral program of the Okuma School of Public Management is six years (up to three years as the standard duration of the program and up to three years as the extended period).

* The tuition for the extended period shall be equivalent to 50% of the tuition to be paid by regular students.

Leave of absence

If a student is unable to attend the research guidance for two consecutive months or more due to a compelling reason such as illness, overseas language study program, and financial conditions, the student can take a "leave of absence" by taking the designated procedures and obtaining the approval. The maximum period for leave of absence is 6 semesters (three years).

Studying Abroad

If a student wishes to be registered in a foreign university/research institution for one semester or more in order to conduct research activities or to participate in training courses, upon the approval by the Okuma School of Public Management Steering Committee, the student can submit an application for "studying abroad".

Students under study abroad programs (except those under the study abroad exchange program or the double-degree program) are exempt from some fees such as tuition, campus development contribution, library fee, and seminar fees. However, they must pay JPY 50,000 as the student account maintenance fee to Waseda University for each semester by the due date specified by Waseda University.

Withdrawal

Withdrawal

If a student wishes to withdraw from the Okuma School of Public Management due to illness or accident, the student must submit the application form specifying the reason for the withdrawal. The application should also bear the signatures of the student and his or her guarantor. In principle, the tuition for the semester must be paid even if the student withdraws from the Okuma School of Public Management in the middle of the academic year.

Removal from the school register due to unpaid tuition

Students who fail to pay the tuition will be removed from the school register.

Withdrawal due to Finished Kenkyushido

If a student has enrolled in the doctoral program for at least three years and is deemed by the academic supervisors that the student's research under guidance is completed, the status of Withdrawal due to Finished Kenkyushido (=completion of research under guidance) can be granted to the student. "Withdrawal due to Finished Kenkyushido" means that the requirements for completion of the doctoral program have been satisfied, except the evaluation of the doctoral dissertation and the examination. Therefore, unlike the usual procedure for withdrawal, these students will become alumni members along with those who graduated from the Schools (undergraduate programs) or completed the master's programs, and hence readmission is not acceptable.

Readmission

Readmission means that a student who has withdrawn is admitted again, under the condition that the reason for withdrawal at the time of withdrawal has been resolved or eliminated. Readmission also requires the applicant to graduate from/complete the doctoral program by the end of the total enrollment period as set forth above. Application for readmission should be submitted within five academic years from the next academic year of the student's withdrawal.

Submission of a doctoral dissertation after withdrawal

If a student who has withdrawn before submitting a dissertation has a record of enrollment in the doctoral program for at least three years and has been granted the status of Finished Kenkyushido, upon the approval from the Okuma School of Public Management Steering Committee and other parties concerned, the student can submit his or her dissertation and apply for the evaluation of dissertation and the examination. However, this is applicable only within three years from the date of the student's withdrawal.
